TIPS
FOR KEEPING A JOURNAL
Whether
you’re new to journaling or you’ve been writing
for years, these ideas can help you get more
from your journal:
Record
the day, date, time, and location for each
entry.
Number
the pages.
Spend
time choosing exactly the right journal and a
favorite writing instrument.
Consider
making a journal index to help you find past
entries and summarize the contents.
Leave an
occasional blank page for comments you might
care to make in the future, as you read your
journal from an older and wiser perspective.
Use
different colors of ink to write about different
subjects or highlight important thoughts.
Don’t be
a perfectionist. Grammar, misspelled words, and
punctuation aren’t important in your journal
because you make the rules.
Write
about things that matter and don’t feel you have
to include every detail of your life.
Write
quickly, without thinking or censoring your
creative thoughts.
Record
details using all your senses. Don’t say, "It’s
a beautiful day." Describe the weather, your
mood, and what you’re wearing.
Don’t
show your journal to others. Knowing someone
else will read the journal can cause you to edit
and censor your writing.
Consider
using multiple journals for different subjects.
For example, dreams, writing exercises, travel
memoirs, and spiritual writing can be kept in
separate notebooks.
