     You’ve probably been warned about literary agents who offer to represent unsuspecting writers and then ask for money to edit their books. This is considered unprofessional; agents should be in business to make money for their clients, not take money from them.

     However, the “no editing” rule leaves boutique agencies like ours in a quandary as we search for promising writers.

     I often find worthy manuscripts that need editing. For two years I accepted writers as clients and edited the manuscripts myself at no charge. In other cases I asked clients to hire a freelance editor of their choice.

     These solutions proved unsatisfactory for two reasons: either I spent too much time working as an unpaid editor, or my potential clients hired editors who produced substandard work and failed to meet our deadlines.

     For over eight years I was a professional editor, and my editing skills are still in great demand from previous clients. Therefore, after much consideration, I decided to accept a limited number of editing clients through a separate
business – with no guarantee our agency will represent these manuscripts.
